With the global debut of the Jaguar Type 01, GT and “cruiser” models are back in the spotlight. Overshadowed by SUVs in recent years, could these cars be poised for a comeback in the electric era?

Jaguar’s accelerating transition to electric mobility has brought cruiser and GT-style cars back into the conversation with the Type 01, which is expected to open for orders from 2027. True automotive enthusiasts never really abandoned these segments, but demand for SUVs and crossovers became so dominant that models of this kind grew considerably harder to find than they once were.

Although expectations are rising that these cars could make a comeback after 2027, changing the preference for the elevated driving position popularised by SUVs may not be easy. For drivers who value driving feel, comfort and long-distance enjoyment over sitting high above the road, however, electric cruisers and GTs are becoming increasingly compelling alternatives.

What Do “Cruiser” and “GT” Mean?

“Cruiser” is not as clearly defined an automotive category as GT. Instead, the term is generally used for cars that prioritise long-distance comfort, quietness and effortless performance. The concept can apply to vehicles across several segments, provided they combine a spacious cabin, refined and isolated ride quality and, when required, substantial power. GT, or Grand Tourer, traditionally refers to cars designed to cover long distances at high speed without compromising either performance or comfort. Today, even a five-door hatchback may carry a GT badge, but the most traditional interpretation of a “true” GT remains a two-door coupé, preferably with a 2+2 seating configuration, a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive.

An Aston Martin DBS is therefore a pure example of the breed, while a four-door model such as the Kia Stinger can still embody the same philosophy. Iconic off-roaders such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, meanwhile, can be considered comfort-oriented “cruisers” for a world beyond the asphalt. Ultimately, understanding the character for which a car was engineered is often more useful than focusing strictly on segment labels when choosing the right model.

Rolls-Royce Spectre

Practically the Definition of an Electric Cruiser and GT

When luxury and the most comfortable possible experience on the road are concerned, Rolls-Royce remains one of the industry’s defining reference points. The all-electric Spectre successfully translates this long-established philosophy into a new generation of propulsion. With its two-door coupé body, the Spectre preserves the traditional GT silhouette, while its exceptionally refined suspension system gives it an equally convincing cruiser character.

With a full-charge driving range of approximately 520 to 628 kilometres, it is also capable of making long-distance journeys remarkably effortless. There is an estimated price difference of around $250,000 between the Spectre and Jaguar’s new Type 01, whose design appears to draw inspiration from the Rolls-Royce in certain details. How this gap will influence competition remains to be seen, but one thing should not be forgotten: one is a Jaguar, while the other is a Rolls-Royce.

Bentley Torcal

An Electric SUV Focused on the Cruiser Experience

For Bentley, the move toward electric mobility does not mean abandoning its long-standing traditions. Instead, it means redefining them through silent, effortless torque. The British manufacturer’s first fully electric model, the Bentley Torcal, takes its name from El Torcal de Antequera, the limestone formations of southern Spain. In essence, the Torcal is a modern luxury cruiser that combines a commanding driving position with the craftsmanship traditionally associated with Bentley’s home in Crewe.

With a 113 kWh battery, power outputs reaching up to 888 hp and a fully active suspension system, the Torcal combines comfort with considerable performance. Bentley is also aiming to give the electric driving experience a more distinctive acoustic identity by using sounds recorded from timpani and other percussion instruments instead of artificial engine noises.

Rather than being a low-slung GT, the Bentley Torcal is best understood as a five-door luxury road cruiser capable of covering long distances with exceptional comfort and effortless power. Technically, the model also draws on architecture related to the new Porsche Cayenne, produced by fellow Volkswagen Group brand Porsche. With an estimated price of around $200,000, the Torcal is positioned somewhere between the Jaguar Type 01 and Rolls-Royce Spectre. It is also worth remembering that the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric sits at approximately $165,000, which may complicate the purchasing decision even further.

Porsche Taycan / Cayenne

The Models That Mainstreamed High-Performance EVs

When it comes to advanced engineering, Porsche continues to shape trends across the automotive industry. The fully electric Taycan, launched in 2019, quickly achieved strong sales and demonstrated to the luxury-car world just how capable battery-electric performance could become. Drivers also discovered, of course, just how quickly range could disappear when that performance was used continuously. Even so, with the Taycan Porsche effectively showed the relatively young Tesla brand how electric performance and traditional premium engineering could be combined.

Today, the Taycan remains one of the leading four-door electric cruisers for drivers who still prefer a low seating position. The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach Package is particularly extreme: with 1,108 hp, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 305 km/h.

The Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach Package is not only one of the most powerful and fastest production cars in Porsche’s history, but has also set notable performance benchmarks at the Nürburgring. For drivers who want similarly dramatic performance from a higher seating position, the Cayenne Turbo Electric offers an alternative. With up to 1,156 hp available through its overboost function, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric can accelerate from rest to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds despite weighing approximately 2.6 tonnes. For buyers who find the traditional SUV silhouette too bulky, Porsche also offers a five-door coupé-bodied alternative, further broadening the model’s appeal.

Audi RS e-Tron GT Performance

An Overlooked Masterpiece

Audi’s electric sports sedan, the e-tron GT, has become considerably more powerful following its facelift. The Audi S e-tron GT, Audi RS e-tron GT and Audi RS e-tron GT Performance now produce 679 hp, 856 hp and 925 hp respectively. At the top of the range, the RS e-tron GT Performance accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds, matching the performance territory of the Porsche Taycan with which it shares key technical architecture. With a price of around $160,000, it is also positioned as one of the more accessible options among ultra-high-performance electric GTs.

BMW i7 M70 xDrive

Even More Radical After Its Facelift

When driving pleasure enters the conversation, BMW is often treated as being in a category of its own. The brand introduced a dramatically different design language with the F-segment 7 Series, and the 2026 facelift pushes that approach even further for customers looking to stand out. Opting for the fully electric i7 does not radically change the car’s appearance either.

The i7 M70 xDrive may not fit the cruiser definition in the strictest sense, but it remains one of the most ambitious electric luxury sedans combining high performance with long-distance comfort. Its extensive customisation possibilities can push the starting price significantly higher, but for drivers seeking a car that prioritises dynamic handling while remaining exceptionally comfortable during relaxed journeys, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive continues to rank among the segment’s strongest choices.

Mercedes-Benz EQS

The Teardrop-Shaped EV Moves Closer to the S-Class

Mercedes-Benz made a radical move when it began producing the EQS in 2022. Four years later, the model has received extensive technical improvements to its underlying architecture, accompanied by more modest visual changes. One of the finest electric cruisers currently on the market, the EQS still features one of the most aerodynamically efficient bodies in the industry.

Cadillac Celestiq

North America’s Ultra-Luxury Challenger

Cadillac, part of General Motors, is using the Celestiq to reclaim the kind of ultra-luxury positioning that once defined the brand. Prices begin at around $350,000, and Cadillac initially planned to limit annual production to a maximum of approximately 500 vehicles. That target, however, may prove difficult to reach. Every Celestiq is hand-built in a dedicated boutique production facility at General Motors’ global technical centre in Michigan, and before manufacturing begins, each customer works directly with designers to define the car’s specification.

Positioned as a North American alternative to Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the Cadillac Celestiq allows colours, leather, wood, metal finishes and fabrics to be developed almost entirely according to the customer’s wishes. Cadillac’s ambition is that no two Celestiqs in the world should be exactly alike. A single 55-inch display stretches across virtually the entire dashboard, while equipment such as a 38-speaker AKG Studio Reference sound system helps create an interior environment designed to isolate occupants almost completely from the outside world.

Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 scans and responds to road conditions up to 1,000 times per second, continuously optimising damper stiffness. Combined with adaptive air suspension and an Active Roll Control system designed to suppress body roll through corners, the chassis delivers far more than raw performance. Its real achievement is the way it isolates occupants from imperfect road surfaces, creating the almost floating sensation expected from a true luxury cruiser. In many ways, it is a thoroughly traditional Cadillac trait brought into the electric age.

Lucid Air Sapphire

A New Brand That Reached the Top Remarkably Quickly

In North America, Tesla’s Model S helped establish the ultra-high-performance electric sedan segment, but Lucid stepped in to provide the luxury dimension that some felt was missing. With 1,234 hp, the Lucid Air Sapphire accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.89 seconds — performance that feels closer to teleportation than conventional acceleration. Its three electric motors provide all-wheel drive and allow the car to reach speeds of up to 330 km/h.

With a restrained yet distinctive design, advanced technology and high-quality materials, the Lucid Air Sapphire continues to justify its approximately $250,000 price tag and occupies one of the highest positions in the electric cruiser world.

BYD Yangwang U7

China’s Response Was Not Long in Coming

As in many other automotive segments, Chinese manufacturers have no intention of leaving the ultra-high-performance electric sedan market entirely to European and American brands. The U7, produced under BYD’s Yangwang luxury marque, is one of the most ambitious cars in this field.

Sold in China for approximately $100,000, the BYD Yangwang U7 could potentially remain below the equivalent of $150,000 if exported to other markets. Using the e⁴ platform with four electric motors, the luxury sedan can produce up to 1,341 hp. Its vertically controlled suspension architecture can respond up to 1,000 times per second, helping the body remain almost completely level while filtering out potholes and surface imperfections.

The U7 is also claimed to be one of the relatively few electric sedans capable of approaching a 1,000-kilometre range under CLTC testing, thanks to a vast 150 kWh next-generation Blade Battery. Whether or not every one of those figures translates directly to real-world driving conditions, the Yangwang U7 has already become a striking symbol of just how rapidly China’s automotive technology has advanced.
