From Los Angeles to Shanghai, the world’s most remarkable new museums and cultural landmarks are redefining architecture in 2026.

What does it take for a building to earn its place in architectural history? Is it a striking design, the millions of dollars invested in its construction, or its ability to transform the identity of an entire city? The most remarkable architecture projects of 2026 offer different answers to these questions. From a futuristic museum born out of George Lucas’s imagination to a Chinese landmark inspired by natural formations, from Peter Zumthor’s much-debated design to London’s newest cultural destination, we explore the projects making their mark on architecture this year, including those still awaiting their grand openings.

Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Los Angeles

Architects: Ma Yansong / MAD Architects and Stantec
Location: Exposition Park, Los Angeles, USA
Opening: September 22, 2026

The imagination of George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars universe, has taken shape once again. This time, however, not on a cinema screen but in the form of a monumental building rising in the heart of Los Angeles. Founded by Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, the museum was designed by Ma Yansong, founder of MAD Architects, and resembles a spacecraft that has landed from another world. The approximately 28,000-square-metre building is surrounded by a 13-acre park.

Inside, works by artists ranging from Frida Kahlo to Norman Rockwell share space with comic books, film costumes and artefacts from the Star Wars universe. The museum’s close ties to Hollywood are reflected in its opening-night co-chairs, including Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise, Greta Gerwig and Pharrell Williams. Its two theatres also host a programme spanning experimental cinema and animation.

LACMA David Geffen Galleries, Los Angeles

Architect: Peter Zumthor
Location: Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, USA
Announced construction budget: $715 million
Opening: April 19, 2026

The new building of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is among the year’s most widely debated architectural projects. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, the David Geffen Galleries challenges conventional museum architecture with its sweeping concrete structure extending across Wilshire Boulevard.

Offering approximately 10,200 square metres of exhibition space, the building breaks away from the traditional chronological presentation of art, instead encouraging connections between works from different geographical regions. In its inaugural installation, the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans, along with the Mediterranean, serve as organising principles for the collection.

Financed largely through private donations, the project counts entertainment mogul David Geffen among its most significant benefactors. His $150 million contribution also gave the new galleries their name.

The curved roofs are more than an aesthetic gesture. They act as architectural elements connecting the different exhibition spaces, while the relationship between galleries and public areas ensures a continuous visual connection with the surrounding lake.

Location: Baselstrasse 101, Riehen, Basel, Switzerland
Opening: Phased opening from September 26, 2026

Fondation Beyeler, one of Switzerland’s most important cultural institutions, is bringing together two giants of contemporary architecture on a single campus. The new museum provides approximately 1,500 square metres of exhibition space across three floors. The expansion also includes a pavilion for cultural events and additional public spaces.

Bringing together approximately 230 works, the exhibition Constellations establishes a dialogue between the institution’s new and existing buildings. Zumthor’s design demonstrates that museum architecture can possess a powerful identity without overshadowing the works of art it houses.
