Special Treatment: Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung

With the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, limited to just 30 examples, Mercedes-AMG is pushing the idea of the collectible car into new territory.

Every now and then, the automotive world produces a car without obsessing over rational numbers, range anxiety or drag coefficients. And sometimes, manufacturers need a car capable of turning the negative perception surrounding controversial new models into something altogether more positive. With the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, AMG has created another highly desirable collector’s car for true petrolheads. The “646” in its name refers to its horsepower output, while “Spezialanfertigung” — literally “special production” — sums up the extensive bespoke treatment behind the car.

Price Remains Undisclosed

Mercedes-AMG has yet to announce an official price for the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, of which only 30 examples will be produced. Given its specification and rarity, however, it would hardly be surprising to see its value approach the $1 million mark. Its true market value may become clearer when one eventually appears at auction.

Built for Driving Purists

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 is currently the most powerful version in the regular CLE range, but the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung dispenses with the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. Developed with driving purists in mind, this rare coupé sends its power exclusively to the rear wheels and features an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. Power is delivered through a specially calibrated AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G automatic transmission.

Around 175 Kg Lighter

By removing the all-wheel-drive system, parking assistance hardware, rear seats and sections of acoustic insulation, AMG has cut approximately 175 kg compared with the standard model. Polycarbonate is used for the rear and rear-side windows, while numerous body panels are made from carbon fibre. A roll cage in the cabin and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust further underline the car’s track-focused character.

A Name Defined by Power

At the heart of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is AMG’s M177 EVO 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. As its name suggests, the engine produces 646 hp, accompanied by 850 Nm of torque — more than enough to make life difficult for the rear tyres. Available between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm, that torque also gives the car considerable flexibility across its operating range.

The engine uses a flat-plane crankshaft, a configuration that reduces rotating mass and allows the engine to rev more freely. It is a solution more commonly associated with supercars. An integrated starter-generator, or ISG, also supports the combustion engine as part of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system designed to improve efficiency.

Mercedes-AMG quotes a 0–100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds and 0–200 km/h in 11.4 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 310 km/h.

Absolute Precision Beneath the Surface

Among the carefully selected components are coilover suspension units jointly developed by Mercedes-AMG and KW Automotive. At the heart of the system are four-way adjustable dampers, allowing independent configuration of low- and high-speed rebound and compression. This gives the chassis an unusually broad range of adjustment for different driving conditions and circuit requirements.

The high-performance carbon-ceramic composite braking system also benefits from bespoke aerodynamic measures designed to improve cooling. Massive 420 x 40 mm discs at the front and 360 x 32 mm discs at the rear are gripped by gold-coloured brake calipers.

Tyre Technology Derived from the Mercedes-AMG ONE

The enormous tyres are one reason the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung has a track width 60 mm greater than the standard car. They measure 305/30 ZR20 at the front and 335/30 ZR20 at the rear, with a compound sharing characteristics with that used on the Mercedes-AMG ONE — the hypercar through which the brand transferred Formula 1-derived technology to the road.

Bespoke wheels developed specifically for the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung sit beneath carbon-fibre wheel arches, completing the car’s sculptural stance.

250 Kg of Downforce at Top Speed

Thanks to extensive aerodynamic work both underneath and around the body, the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung generates 250 kg of downforce at its 310 km/h top speed. The spoiler, diffuser and wing can be adjusted according to road or track configuration.

As a result, Mercedes-AMG quotes two different drag coefficients: 0.402 Cd in road configuration and 0.417 Cd in race configuration. At a time when production cars are approaching figures around 0.20 Cd, numbers this high make the priorities of the CLE 646 abundantly clear: generating downforce takes precedence over minimising drag. And for those wondering, fuel consumption is quoted at 15.8 litres per 100 km.

The First Cars Are Already Spoken For

If the launch film shot in Madrid with Formula 1 drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell has you considering adding one to your garage, there is some bad news: you are already too late. All 30 examples, each assembled entirely by hand in Affalterbach, were allocated to selected customers well before the car’s public premiere. Who those owners are may become clearer in the years ahead — particularly if one of these exceptionally rare AMGs eventually appears at auction.
