Here’s a glimpse of one of the must-see productions of 2024.
Animal Farm
This season, a one-act adaptation of George Orwell’s iconic novel Animal Farm is set to take the stage. While Orwell’s work originally reflects the Russian Revolution, the play highlights the ongoing relevance of its political themes today. After the animals seize control of the farm, a reversal begins to unfold, sparking confusion about what they can no longer recall or believe. The central question lingers: was their revolt truly driven by hunger, or was it a deeper desire for a new social order? It’s this uncertainty that fuels their rebellion and their rapid conviction. Directed by Barış Erdenk, this powerful production will debut at Oyun Atölyesi in October.
Chaplin
For the first time ever, the life of Charlie Chaplin, one of the most iconic artists of the silent cinema era, is being brought to the stage in a 2-act musical. Known for the sadness hidden beneath his hat, his whimsical steps, and the innocence of his smile, Chaplin’s story is one of enduring charm and melancholy. Directed by Saim Güveloğlu, the production features a star-studded cast including Özgür Daniel Foster, Aybüke Pusat, Şebnem Dönmez, Emre Taşkıran, Murat Danacı, Defne Koldaş, Semih Ali Aksoy, and Çınar Yener. This musical promises to be a touching tribute to Chaplin’s legacy.
Afife
Inspired by the legendary Afife Jale, a pioneering figure in Turkish theater, this play follows the story of an imaginary troupe that mirrors Afife’s journey. Demet Evgar takes on the lead role in this modern interpretation of Afife Jale’s rebellion against societal norms, as she fought for women’s presence on stage and became a beacon of hope in dark times. Written by Selin Cankı Ceylan and directed by Serdar Biliş, Afife features an impressive cast, including Ayta Sözeri, Tilbe Saran, Necip Memili, Bora Akkaş, İdil Sivritepe, Bedir Bedir, Orkuncan İzan, Bilge Çınar, Kerem Arslanoğlu, Öyküsu Okur, and Besma Seiba. With music composed by Tuluğ Tırpan and lyrics by Sezen Aksu, the play will premiere on September 14 at Zorlu PSM and continue throughout the season.

Misery
Based on Stephen King’s gripping novel, Misery is one of the most anticipated plays of the new season. The story follows Paul Sheldon, a bestselling author famous for his character Misery Chastain. Growing weary of Misery, Paul decides to kill her off in his latest book and write a more serious novel. As he finishes the manuscript in a hotel and prepares to head home, he gets into an accident and is rescued by his former nurse, Annie Wilkes. However, Paul soon finds Annie’s behavior unsettling and becomes concerned about her mental stability. When Annie reads Paul’s new novel, the situation quickly spirals out of control. The play stars Cansel Elçin, Sedef Akalın, and Uğur Baran. Misery will begin its run on October 11th and continue throughout the season.
Sidikli Kasabası Müzikali
In a world grappling with drought, the bizarre new law bans household toilets, leaving the public reliant on a private company run by the businessman Cladwell. Those unable to afford this service are sent to the dystopian Sidikli Town, never to return. The rebellion against this absurd system is ignited by the love between Bobby, a young man with his own ideals, and Hope, an educated woman from the upper class. Sidikli Kasabası offers a unique musical experience, blending rap, swing, marches, and more. Directed by Kayhan Berkin, the musical features performances by Settar Tanrıöğen and Canan Ergüder. With a sprawling cast of 27, Sidikli Town Musical promises a dynamic story and non-stop energy throughout the season.

Mercaniye Çok Yaşa
Prepare for a journey back in time with Mercaniye Çok Yaşa by Theater Imagination. Set during the final days of the Ottoman Empire, this play unfolds aboard the aging warship Mercaniye, which has been moored in the Golden Horn for two decades. The narrative contrasts the dilapidated ship with its crew, who are wasting time in the coffee houses of Kasımpaşa. Captain Asaf, who has waited patiently for twenty years to embark on heroic sea adventures, finally sets sail one afternoon with his crew—Şerif Ali, Kazel, and Mimhal. What adventures lie ahead for these seafaring heroes? With its lively humor, playful spirit, and era-inspired songs, Mercaniye Çok Yaşa promises a delightful theatrical experience. Featuring performances by Erdem Akakçe, Sevil Akı, Bülent Çolak, Bihter Dinçel, and Fatih Koyunoğlu, the play will premiere at Baba Sahne on September 20 and will tour various venues across the city throughout the season.
Ayna
The invitation may suggest you’re attending a simple wedding between Leyla and Joel, but is it really just a wedding? Set in a totalitarian regime where every work of art must be sanctioned by the Ministry of Culture, a theater troupe has managed to stage their own play in a surprising twist. How does this rebellious act intersect with the wedding? Featuring Aytek Şayan, Barış Gönenen, Begüm Akkaya, Uğur Uzunel, and Serhat Barış, Ayna explores themes of love and justice in a society where everything is devalued, all wrapped in hilarious satire. Celebrating its seventh anniversary, DasDas kicks off its new theater season with Ayna on September 20. Don’t miss this laugh-out-loud play that promises to be a highlight of the season.
İspat
Ispat explores the complex aftermath of the death of Robert, a celebrated mathematician. Left behind are his mathematical theorems, his home, and numerous notebooks filled with his writings. The play delves into the resulting conflict between Robert’s daughters, Catherine and Claire, and his former student, Hal. The narrative grapples with powerful themes such as individuality, gender, labor, inheritance, the grieving process, and the ethics of science and responsibility. Premiering on September 19, Ispat features Derya Özsoy, Sarp Doğa Çelik, and Güneş Hanağası in a thought-provoking exploration of legacy and personal dynamics.
Karanlık Şarkılar
Karanlık Şarkılar (Dark Songs) delves into a profound question: If we were to lose our memories, would our emotions vanish as well, or would they persist within us? This poignant play explores the theme of memory through the story of two individuals who serendipitously meet at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Their journey weaves together elements of love, addiction, and the struggle to remember. Starring Derya Artemel and Orçun Soytürk, Karanlık Şarkılar presents a powerful narrative about deep and passionate love, constantly challenged by the destructive forces of addiction. Premiering on October 15, this emotional production will be available to audiences throughout the season.
