The “unique piece” Excalibur Moonlight by Roger Dubuis opens a portal to the mysterious universe of outer space through its dial.
Watches and Wonders 2026 once again drew attention not only with its new timepieces, but also with the striking scenography of the maisons’ booths. Among them, the Roger Dubuis presentation stood out, unveiling its novelties under the theme “Movements of the Sky” in an immersive universe inspired by the heavens and outer space. One of the highlights was the new Excalibur Moonlight, a timepiece that brings not only a starry sky but the depths of the cosmos directly onto the dial.
The Excalibur Moonlight was developed and crafted within the Rarities program of Roger Dubuis, an experimental platform dedicated to highly exclusive creations, including bespoke commissions. Produced in a workshop hidden behind a mysterious red door on the third floor of the Roger Dubuis manufacture, Rarities timepieces are often conceived in collaboration with clients, sometimes even incorporating their personal input. The only requirement is the creation of singular haute horlogerie pieces, brought to life through the hands of master artisans.
Turning back to the Excalibur Moonlight itself, the watch reflects this year’s “Movements of the Sky” theme through a dial composition that unites the Moon, stars, and the twelve constellations. This celestial tableau is enhanced by a layered dial construction, adding depth and architectural complexity. At the center, the tourbillon cage integrates a lunar surface-inspired motif, evoking the sensation of an opening into the cosmos.
Time indication is also reinterpreted: hours and minutes are displayed not through traditional hands, but by rotating discs, reinforcing the watch’s contemporary mechanical language. In total, the dial is composed of four distinct layers, each contributing to its sense of dimensionality.
