Bishop: A Design Inspired by Chess Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary
Renowned designer India Mahdavi celebrates the 25th anniversary of her iconic Bishop stool with an exhibition and a special chocolate design.

The Bishop, one of India Mahdavi’s signature creations in the design world, came to life in 1999. Designed and produced in France, this unique piece marks its 25th year in 2024, once again showcasing Mahdavi’s playful yet sophisticated approach to design.

Inspired by the chess piece, which moves diagonally, the Bishop defies linear movements, serving as both a stool and a side table. Available in over 20 color options, this timeless design adapts seamlessly to various styles and can be used in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Over the years, India Mahdavi has continuously reimagined the iconic form, adding new dimensions, materials, and functionalities to its design. The collection now includes innovative pieces such as the smaller Baby Bishop stool, the larger Cocktail table, and the Peanut tray that unites two Bishops. The COD (Direct Object Complement) tray further enhances the collection by transforming the stool into a functional side table.

Reflecting on the creation process, India Mahdavi says: “I created the Bishop stool to bring to life a design that didn’t exist. I wanted to create a sculptural and unique piece that, when grouped together, could resemble a chessboard. The initial design was very graphic and bold, but it was aimed at a narrow production scale. I later adapted it into a more versatile design that could function as both a stool and a side table. My work with ceramics began during a hotel project in Mexico City, where the material inspired my first ceramic design, offering a texture that is visually warm yet physically cool.”

This special chocolate features a silky pistachio filling inspired by Iranian pistachios and includes six carefully roasted pistachios, drawing flavors from Persian cuisine. Presented on a lilac Abbassi bed that pays homage to Iranian culture, the chocolate is wrapped in Mahdavi’s energetic and graphic “Criss Cross” design, reflecting the elegance and festive spirit of the design.
