The World’s Most Expensive Model Cars
Model cars, often dismissed as mere “toys,” can in fact cost far more than real automobiles—especially when they are the first of their kind or adorned with precious stones.

In the world of Die-Cast collecting, where passion for cars meets craftsmanship, there is something for every budget. Yet today, some of these “tiny toys” found in malls or supermarkets can carry price tags that far exceed the cost of actual vehicles. Exploring the world’s most expensive model cars might just make you rethink the value of your own collection.

Rolls-Royces with 12,000 Pieces

$40,000

The Die-Cast version of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan—already one of the world’s most expensive SUVs—has earned the title “The World’s Most Expensive Die-Cast.” This 1/8-scale model starts at $17,000 and can reach up to $40,000. For that amount, you could purchase a real premium SUV, but what makes this “toy” so exceptional is its fully handcrafted production, requiring more than 450 hours of meticulous work.

The model includes functional headlights and interior lighting, and features every detail down to the wood trim and the signature Rolls-Royce umbrellas tucked inside the doors. Its engine bay is an accurate replica of the real Cullinan’s, though—naturally—it doesn’t run. One of its most striking features is the full-sized remote control that can be stored in the trunk. Through this remote, you can lock the doors, switch on the headlights, or open the hood. Collectors can also order similarly intricate models of the Ghost or Phantom, each composed of up to 1,200 parts and customizable with personalized colors and equipment packages, just like the Cullinan.

Ferrari Sold at a Record Auction Price

$90,000

Ferraris are notoriously expensive—but their Die-Cast replicas can be just as staggering. This Ferrari 812 Competizione, produced by Amalgam, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-detail model cars, shattered records. In 2023, it was sold for $90,000 at an auction held to benefit the Ferrari Foundation.

This 1:8-scale replica consists of 651 hand-assembled pieces. Its production was based on CAD data supplied by the Ferrari Style Center, enabling a miniature version that faithfully mirrors the $5 million original. The model replicates the matte “Giallo Tristrato” exterior applied over a matte “Nero DS Sketch” base, while the interior features Superfabric carpets and Alcantara upholstery that perfectly match the real car. Approved by Ferrari Design Director Flavio Manzoni, replicas of this one-off model have since been produced for collectors. During the charity auction, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz also examined the model up close. For those interested, similar Die-Cast Ferraris can even be found in select stores in Turkey.

Hot Wheels Beach Bomb Prototype

$100,000 (Estimated)

How much would you pay for a toy prototype produced in only two units back in 1969? For one collector, the answer was $72,000. The Die-Cast in question looks almost identical to the 1/64-scale toys commonly produced under Mattel’s Hot Wheels brand. What sets it apart, however, is that it is a rare prototype created before mass production—and one that helped Hot Wheels challenge the long-established dominance of Matchbox.

Hot Wheels began releasing toy cars in 1968, manufacturing them in the United States until 1972 before expanding production worldwide. Known for their speed, vivid paint colors, track sets, and limited-edition collector series, Hot Wheels quickly became legendary. The “Beach Bomb,” inspired by the Volkswagen Minibus and featuring a pink exterior with plastic surfboards that were said to float, entered the Hot Wheels lineup in 1969 in several colors. But the original 1969 prototype marked a turning point in toy-car history. Recently appearing on the TV show Pawn Stars, the prototype was valued at an astonishing $100,000.

Gold-Plated Bugatti

$2.9 Million

Bugatti is known for producing some of the world’s fastest, most powerful, and most expensive cars. In 2010, the brand added another extraordinary title from the Die-Cast world. After leaving his engineering career at Mercedes-Benz, Rupert Gülpen developed a passion for creating model cars and collaborated with Stuart Hughes on the “Bugatti Veyron Diamond Edition,” priced at an unbelievable $2.9 million.

Only three examples were ever built. These 1/18-scale models feature 24-karat gold, platinum, and 7.2-karat diamonds, turning them into miniature works of jewelry as much as automotive replicas.

German Engineer’s Carbon-Fiber Aventador

$7.5 Million

Not content with a Bugatti adorned with precious stones, Robert “Wilhelm” Gülpen set out to break his own record—this time with a Lamborghini Aventador. His “standard” 1/8-scale Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 model costs $4.1 million, roughly 12 times the price of the real car.

Just like its life-sized counterpart, the model is constructed entirely from carbon fiber. In Gülpen’s next series, the car was further embellished with gemstones, bringing its price to an astonishing $7.5 million. This model required 500 hours of handcrafting and incorporates 18-karat platinum, 24-karat gold, and diamonds of various sizes.
