The world’s 50 best restaurants will be announced through an award ceremony to be held in Valencia on June 20. For us, it is a matter of curiosity whether Mikla will be among the top 50 best restaurant in the world.
The 20th edition of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards will be presented on June 20 in Valencia, Spain, with a ceremony sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna.
Before this award night, which the gastronomy world is looking forward to, a comprehensive event program has been prepared for June 18-20. The 50 Best Signature Sessions, which will include public food events, 50 Best Talks, which will feature speeches by opinion leaders in the field of gastronomy, and Chefs’ Feast, where local products and dishes of Spain will be exhibited, will bring pleasant smells from all over the city. This time, gastronomy students in Spain will benefit from free trainings with the participation of the world’s most famous chefs.
The winner of last year’s award ceremony in London and the best in the world, chef Rasmus Kofoed’s Danish Geranium will be added to The Best of the Best list, which includes the best of previous years, and will not be classified.
Why is World’s 50 Best Restaurant List is Important for Gastronomy?
The 50 Best list was first prepared in 2002 by William Reed, a renowned media company in the UK. At that time, the 50 Best list was just a piece of content for Restaurant magazine, but over time, it has evolved beyond the boundaries of the magazine and has become a national and then a global ranking.
Since its inception, the awards have focused on ranking the top 50 best restaurants in the world, but over time, different classifications such as Best Female Chef, Chefs’ Choice voted by the previous year’s chefs, and the Icon Award have emerged. In some regions, the list of the best restaurants continued under the name 51-100. Measuring the trends of the global gastronomy world like a barometer, the list symbolizes a cross-border palate.
Guiding aspiring gourmets, inspiring not only food lovers but also restaurant and bar explorers and travel addicts, the awards are very successful in revealing promising chefs.
Choosing Best Restaurants
The voting is done by 1,080 expert voters. Voters from 27 different countries participate in the voting process, with 50 percent women and 50 percent men, ensuring gender equality. Each year, 25 percent of the voters are new participants. According to 50 Best officials, 34 percent of the voters this year are chefs, 33 percent are food writers, and the remaining 33 percent are traveling gourmets. Each voter can vote for 10 restaurants. The interesting thing about the voting is that there are no criteria. What is the best depending entirely on the voter’s own taste.
Best of Best Noma
Noma has been awarded “Best” four times in 20 years, doubling its three Michelin star reputation. Also, Chef Ferran Adrià’s The Catalan El Burri followed Noma by winning three times. However, after 20 years, the top three names of the voting were repeated among certain restaurants, and a new regulation was introduced in 2016 and the winners of the previous years were excluded from the evaluation. When Noma closed in 2016 and reopened in a new location with a new concept, it was re-evaluated and once again took the first prize in 2021.
Turkish Restaurants Are on the List
Before the ceremony, the names of the 51-100 selected restaurants were announced. Neolokal, once again made the list with its modern twist on traditional Turkish cuisine, this time in 63rd place. Fatih Tutak’s TURK that received a Michelin star last year, made its first entry in 66th place. Mikla, which has been in the top 100 since 2015 and ranked as high as 44th in 2018, will be announced on June 20 whether it will enter the top 50.
