And the Oscar Goes To…

The Oscar statuette is 13.5 in tall and weighs approximately 4 kg, depicts a knight rendered in Art Deco style has been going to international stars of the cinema world since 1929. Although its original name is “Academy Award of Merit”, it is often referred to with Oscar nickname. Many stories have told about name of Oscar, one of these that Margaret Herrick, the Academy executive secretary, who, when she first saw the award in 1931, said the statuette reminded her of “Uncle Oscar”, a nickname for her cousin Oscar Pierce. If this story is true, “Uncle Oscar” became more famous than he could ever imagine. Indeed, the Academy Award also became more unexpectedly famous over time. The Academy Award was firstly held on May 16, 1929; it was a simple dinner function. However, magnificence, categories and excitement of Oscar has been increasing over years. Many people watch Oscar ceremony from all over world. Once again, we have watched Oscar Awards last night. No doubt that “Nomadland” and “Mank” were stars of last night.

Nomadland

Nomadland written, co-produced and directed by Chloé Zhao, it based on the 2017 non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder. Fern has moved from Nevada after her husband died, she is a “homeless” woman and travels the USA. The movie examines home and homeless concepts that a lonely woman faced with. David Strathairn, Linda May, Swankie and Bob Weils are nomad’s person from real life that play on the movie. This is an extraordinary situation that we are not used to see on the films. The movie talks about story of an ordinary women in such poetical way.

The Best Director Award went to Chloé Zhao and The Best Movie Award went to “Nomadland”. Zhao is the first Asian woman that has award in this category. The Best Actress Award wen to Frances McDormand.

Mank was also another movie got many awards. In the movie is said that “You cannot capture life of a person in two hours. All you can hope for is to make an impression.” The movie will have made an incredibly good impression that it received Oscars in 4 categories. Directed by David Fincher, the film based on Herman Mankiewicz’s life story. The film is based on the scenario Fincher’s father wrote before he died. “Mank” has a story that tells the love of Hollywood, politics, and cinema around the writing process of “Citizen Kane”, which is considered one of the best films in history. Thus, the movie becomes another Hollywood story that has been brought to the cinema after Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”.

The Best Cinematographer Award went Erik Messerschmidt, cinematographer of “Mank”. The film also won The Best Production and Best Production Design Awards.

Another debut at the 2021 Oscar Awards was Anthony Hopkins’ The Best Actor Award for his performance in “The Father”. “I did not really expect this award as a person at 83,” said Hopkins, he is the oldest person that receive an Oscar. The actor had received The Best Actor Award for his performance in “The Silence of The Lambs” 29 year ago.

2021 Oscar Ödülleri’nin pandemi şartlarında gerçekleştirilmesi ve her sene olduğu gibi verilen ödüllerin doğru yere gidip gitmediği gibi meseleler üzerine uzun uzun konuşulabilir. Ne var ki, içinden geçtiğimiz bu zor dönemde sinemanın, filmlerin büyülü dünyasının bizlere ne kadar heyecan verdiği yadsınamaz bir gerçek. Bu yüzden yazıyı bitirirken tüm bu filmler için, “Mavi Boncuk”ta Münir Özkul’un karakterinin “Avare” filminin afişini göstererek söylediği “Hayatımızı kurtaran filmler” repliğini anımsatmak istiyorum. Kim bilir, belki şehre bir film gelir…
