Omega and Swatch has collaborated to produce a playful iconic Speedmaster.
Like the Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. collaboration, an exciting partnership has recently announced early times of this morning: a watch produced in collaboration between Omega and Swatch.
You might imagine that we wrote this article with an enthusiasm that a reader feels when a new Harry Potter book releases. Because for the first time, Omega and Swatch is collaborating.
BioCeramic Moon Swatch features the overall looking of Omega’s iconic Speedmaster model, which landed on the Moon with the Apollo 11 mission. The timepiece houses many iconic designs of Speedmaster like asymmetrical case, iconic tachymeter scale with the dot on the number ninety on the bezel and counters… Black version of the watch seems like completely a Speedmaster, yet there are unusual colors such as pink, baby blue and other 11 versions.
To date, various collaborations gave a colorful touch to fashion world, like partnership between Manolo Blahnik and Birkenstock, Gucci and North Face, Louis Vuitton and Supreme. And seems that these kinds of colorful collaborations will continue, just like the new collaboration of Omega and Swatch. Omega x Swatch watches consist of 11 Swatch timepieces named after the giant star in the center of solar system and the planetary bodies in its orbit. The name of the inspired planet is written on the battery cover of each watch (such as Moon mission, Earth mission, Mars mission).
Another key piece about these 11 models referring to Apollo 11 and 11 planet-stars is that two-thirds of them are made of ceramics and one-third of them are made of castor oil-based plastic alloy bio-ceramics. Bioplastic watches were first announced with a Swatch collection in 2020. Then, bioplastic-ceramic “bioceramic” watches were introduced and these ultra-light watches have been used in all major Swatch from end of 2021.
Omega explains the source of this collaboration with Swatch as “a tribute to Swatch saved the Swiss watchmaking” during the Quartz Crisis. Swatch saved the Swiss watchmaking, which was on the brink of collapse after the Far East’s discovery of quartz watches, which were cheap and a kind of price-performance product. And the brand literally revolutionized the industry by announcing the first 51-piece plastic watch in 1983.
Omega CEO Raynald Aeschlimann also says, “The MoonSwatch collection salutes the saviors of our industry in a witty and accessible way. The Swatches are perfect for budding Moonwatch fans and I can’t think of a more appropriate icon for our shared project. We went to the moon, now we’re exploring the whole Milky Way. They’re great watches, in fantastic colours and they make me smile.”
