Transforming sound into art and enables us to establish perceptual relationships with architectural structures, Bill Fontana will present his art performance Silent Echoes – Notre Dame on June 7, at the art gallery Arter in Beyoğlu. The exhibition is available from 7th of September to 13th of September.
The performance consists of a ten-channel sound installation in which the vibrations corresponding to the ambient sounds of the bells of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris are recorded and brought to an audible frequency.
In 2019, the ten remaining bells from the cathedral, which was severely damaged by a fire and is under restoration, were given to the artist with special permission from the French authorities to become the sound of the cathedral, which is obliged to remain silent until 2024. Fontana recorded the vibrations of the bells in response to the ambient sounds of Paris with the accelerometers he placed in each of them and made these vibrations audible to the human ear with his unique art perception.
The artist’s original designs can be seen on Tuesdays and Sundays from 11.00 to 19.00 and on Thursdays from 11.00 to 20.00.
