The Freak collection, conceived by the watchmaking genius Dr. Ludwig Oechslin, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Marking the occasion is the collection’s newest addition: the new Freak [X].

This year, Ulysse Nardin celebrates not only its 180th anniversary in the world of horology but also the 25th anniversary of one of its most iconic collections, the Freak. Designed by watchmaker Dr. Ludwig Oechslin in 2001, the original Freak introduced an unconventional way of displaying time with its handless dial and flying carousel architecture. Since then, the collection has continued to evolve through a series of models, earning 35 patents and incorporating 17 different calibres. More compact versions were developed for everyday wear, and the family continued to grow. This year, a new model joins the lineup to mark the milestone anniversary: the Freak [X].

More Compact, More Advanced

The new Calibre UN-232 has been engineered in a more compact format than its predecessor. The movement features the DIAMonSIL escapement system, enhancing both precision and durability. It is also equipped with three advanced micro-engineering systems designed to reduce friction, lower noise levels and optimise energy transmission. The movement is assembled by a single watchmaker at Ulysse Nardin’s manufacture in Le Locle and offers a power reserve of 72 hours.

Designed for comfortable everyday wear, the Freak [X] is housed in a 41 mm case. Compared to the previous generation, the case diameter has been reduced from 43 mm to 41 mm, while the lug-to-lug measurement has been shortened from 49.6 mm to 47.3 mm, resulting in noticeably more compact proportions. Depending on the reference, the case is crafted either from steel containing 80% recycled material or from rose gold. The watches are water-resistant to 100 metres.
